Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES)

The Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) is the foremost legal English examination for law students and legal professionals, with worldwide recognition.

What Cambridge Professional Trainers does for you

Our trainers have a long and highly-successful track record in helping students target problem areas and areas of opportunity in the TOLES exam.

We understand that clear, effective English is of particular importance to lawyers, that rights and obligations need to be expressed precisely and plainly, without ambiguity, and that advice to clients must be intelligible and to the point.

Our approach is therefore pragmatic and flexible, tailored to your needs, and guided by the particular requirements of legal professionals as reflected in the TOLES examination.

  • The TOLES tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

It can be taken at three levels: Foundation, Higher and Advanced.

The examination is 90 minutes at Foundation and Higher, and 120 minutes at Advanced. It is computer-based, and is taken in accredited test centres.

  • Foundation

The focus of the Foundation level is absolute accuracy in technical legal vocabulary and grammar, at an elementary / lower intermediate level.

    Higher

The Higher level tests the ability to deal with more complex authentic legal documents and scenarios while also continuing to focus on a strict attention to detail and grammatical accuracy.

    Advanced

The Advanced exam measures a candidate’s skills against a native English-speaking lawyer. The exam has a strong focus on the vocabulary and grammar required for contract drafting, in addition to a grasp of register, and of technical legal vocabulary.
