Norma is an UCLES / RSA CELTA-qualified teacher who is also a qualified nurse, having worked  for 18 years in nursing practice at several hospitals in the UK, including the John Radcliffe and the Park Hospital for Children, both in Oxford. She subsequently taught Medical English for Swedish medical doctors and nurses in Stockholm for three years, and has taught English in California and Maryland in the USA, and, for twenty years, in Cambridge, where she also taught business, medical and general English at OISE.

Her degree is in art history, and she has not only lived abroad in several countries but has also travelled extensively, including to the Arctic and the Antarctic.
